School House Canyon – August 2019
This was our second visit to School House Canyon…. we really enjoy this place and plan on visiting again and again. This time we got an adults only site in the very back of the property. It’s quiet, secluded and very pretty. A lot of the sites here are shaded by mysterious, very cool looking trees that arch over the hillside making for a beautiful camp setting. The only downside is the long walk to the bathroom, otherwise we really liked the tranquility it offers being away from the activity of central camp.
After dropping off the Teardrop we headed just down the highway to The Russian River Pub for the burgers, which have been featured on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. This would be considered a Dive ;-). They have a front patio that gets lively, allows dogs and for the artistically inclined colored pencils for drawing on your butcher paper covered table. Oh, and the burgers were delicious!
The next morning we made the dutch oven quiche casserole from our new cookbook, the Dirty Gourmet that we recently bought. It was fun to make but lacking a bit in flavor. Next time we will definitely make it our own and add more ingredients.
We also made the Backcountry Skillet Enchiladas from this book as well. We just added some vegetables. For more details on our meals – go to the recipes section of our site.
School House Canyon has its own private beach across the highway where guests can picnic, swim and launch kayaks. They also rent tubes to guests for floating down the river. We went for a relaxing paddle. One of our new favorite activities!
As much as we love cooking meals at camp, a big part of our camping experience is exploring what the local area has to offer and we are always up to find fun restaurants that are close by and dog friendly. Bravas was a fantastic find in downtown Healdsburg. We sat at the very cool outside bar, which serves delicious speciality cocktails. Paella is the signature dish so we had to try it. It did not disappoint! The restaurant staff was very friendly and many of them stopped to give Sato some love, making this place a new favorite.
Another thing we love about camping in the wine country is……. the wine tasting! Since we are both California kids, we enjoy wine and visiting as many of the local wineries as we can :-). While sitting at the outside bar at Bravas, we happened to meet one of the family members of Fritz winery, so naturally we made that our first wine tasting stop the next day.
Here are a couple other wine stops we really enjoyed and are dog friendly:
Dutchers Crossing – Very cool setting and picturesque patio.
Dry creek – Beautiful outdoor garden setting with outdoor tastings and corn hole boards!
Looking forward to seeking out more wineries to visit on our next trip to School House Canyon!
Here are some best camp spots at Schoolhouse Canyon that offer some privacy and enough space for a small trailer.
